Opportunity Is Optimistic :)

First Opportunity:
UF Sailing Team’s equipment damaged by high winds

The harsh winds of December 14th, 2019 were so bad at Lake Wauburg that the boats being stored there along with some equipment was destroyed in the storm

The problem presented was that these boats weren’t properly secured in a way that would protect them from harsh weather.

The problem presented directly affects the UD sailing team and everyone that contributes to their organization.

Second Opportunity:
Future of Gainesville Lucky’s Market remains unclear

The article speaks about how the Lucky Market had to file for bankruptcy and will be bought out by another major chain, Aldi. They also interviewed a worked at Lucky’s and he mentioned about 80 people will lose their jobs in Gainesville because of this.

The problem presented is that the area of Lucky’s market due to other service industry companies moving in challenged the fate of same style stores. It just happens to be that it did not win in the grocery store competition of survival.

This will directly affect 4 groups of people in my realm of knowledge. The consumers, management and in-house workers, higher up business owners managing Lucky on the higher-class rate, and other grocery store companies.

Third Opportunity:
Gainesville Set to Become First U.S. City with self-driving buses on public roads

The article speaks about how Gainesville will now be home to “toaster looking”, self-driving buses.

This is seen as a positive article but the way I see it, is as a problem. This is a problem because Alachua county is already in higher rates of poverty and homelessness and we are taking away lower-class jobs that will make these uneducated, lower class individuals forcefully pushed to look for other work

This effects the lower-class bus-driver, the management that oversees the current bus system, and the users of the bus system. This will require more educated individuals to properly run the new bus systems and higher-class individuals that could find other jobs elsewhere and in return create more poverty.

Fourth Opportunity:
High-priority violations: Alachua County restaurant inspections

This article speaks on how a lot of the food industry violations in Gainesville have a higher priority because they risk the health of all consumers.

The problem presented is that the restaurants often don’t care a lot about how clean their place is but instead about how they can maximize profit and get the most money out of their day including taking short cuts and paying the lowest wages possible.

This directly hurts the consumers and puts their health at risk and hurts the company reputation due to having these violations in public record.

Fifth Opportunity:
Police Warn of popular scamming methods

This talks about a scam that is going around regarding a robotic voice asking questions regarding social security numbers.

The problem identified is that a lot of people aren’t sure about things that aren’t allowed to be discussed over the phone. One being that SSN aren’t always required to be discussed

This identifies Chiefland civilians as victims of this problem but could be expanded to all of the public.

  1. Hi Brynn,
I liked reading your list of local opportunities, because we took different routes in regards to picking out stories. When I was searching through newspaper articles, I was looking for any local article that revolved around some problem in any way. When you did it, it seems you looked more into stories with issues that have a potential solution, which is awesome! Great post!
