Opportunity Is Optimistic :)

First Opportunity:
UF Sailing Team’s equipment damaged by high winds

The harsh winds of December 14th, 2019 were so bad at Lake Wauburg that the boats being stored there along with some equipment was destroyed in the storm

The problem presented was that these boats weren’t properly secured in a way that would protect them from harsh weather.

The problem presented directly affects the UD sailing team and everyone that contributes to their organization.

Second Opportunity:
Future of Gainesville Lucky’s Market remains unclear

The article speaks about how the Lucky Market had to file for bankruptcy and will be bought out by another major chain, Aldi. They also interviewed a worked at Lucky’s and he mentioned about 80 people will lose their jobs in Gainesville because of this.

The problem presented is that the area of Lucky’s market due to other service industry companies moving in challenged the fate of same style stores. It just happens to be that it did not win in the grocery store competition of survival.

This will directly affect 4 groups of people in my realm of knowledge. The consumers, management and in-house workers, higher up business owners managing Lucky on the higher-class rate, and other grocery store companies.

Third Opportunity:
Gainesville Set to Become First U.S. City with self-driving buses on public roads

The article speaks about how Gainesville will now be home to “toaster looking”, self-driving buses.

This is seen as a positive article but the way I see it, is as a problem. This is a problem because Alachua county is already in higher rates of poverty and homelessness and we are taking away lower-class jobs that will make these uneducated, lower class individuals forcefully pushed to look for other work

This effects the lower-class bus-driver, the management that oversees the current bus system, and the users of the bus system. This will require more educated individuals to properly run the new bus systems and higher-class individuals that could find other jobs elsewhere and in return create more poverty.

Fourth Opportunity:
High-priority violations: Alachua County restaurant inspections

This article speaks on how a lot of the food industry violations in Gainesville have a higher priority because they risk the health of all consumers.

The problem presented is that the restaurants often don’t care a lot about how clean their place is but instead about how they can maximize profit and get the most money out of their day including taking short cuts and paying the lowest wages possible.

This directly hurts the consumers and puts their health at risk and hurts the company reputation due to having these violations in public record.

Fifth Opportunity:
Police Warn of popular scamming methods

This talks about a scam that is going around regarding a robotic voice asking questions regarding social security numbers.

The problem identified is that a lot of people aren’t sure about things that aren’t allowed to be discussed over the phone. One being that SSN aren’t always required to be discussed

This identifies Chiefland civilians as victims of this problem but could be expanded to all of the public.

Further into the Abyss

I have a belief that most people with no show socks come across a dysfunctional problem with them. I think that there is a lot of room for improvement with them. When you wear suck little socks on your foot the back (aka heel) part of the sock constantly falls off through the day. Everyone that wears these socks, especially business professionals have this need. This is a need that has always existed although little has been done for consumers to help. I’m 100% that this opportunity for improvement exists. The prototypical customer are men and women of all ages, mostly adults. Not many children wear these types of socks.

Iteration No. 1: Jane Perez
What is a problem you currently have wearing no-show socks?
-      They fall off all the time, they show often, and sometimes they wedge into your feet.
When did you identify this problem, or how long did it take you to realize there was aggravation in this?
-      The first time wearing them.
If a solution were to arise allowing for these to be more secure on your feet, would you be satisfied?
-      I’m never satisfied, so no. Although with the socks, yes.
Review?
-      Jane seemed to identify the problem before I told her about what I was going to be asking her. I believe this gives insight that the problem is very much there and an opportunity for improvement.

Iteration No. 2: Stephanie Hencin

What is a problem you currently have wearing no-show socks?
-      I walk around and everything is fine but deep down inside my shoe, my sock is falling off.
When did you identify this problem, or how long did it take you to realize there was aggravation in this?
-      The first wear.
If a solution were to arise allowing for these to be more secure on your feet, would you be satisfied?
-      If I felt like the solution was appropriate.
Review?
-      I love how she went in depth with how it really aggravated her when she started becoming a consumer of this product.

Iteration No. 3: Chloe Hencin
What is a problem you currently have wearing no-show socks?
-      I wear them a lot and none of the brands I have tried stay on my feet.
When did you identify this problem, or how long did it take you to realize there was aggravation in this?
-      The first time I wore them was when I noticed how unfunctional they are.
If a solution were to arise allowing for these to be more secure on your feet, would you be satisfied?
-      Definitely. I’m surprised there isn’t one already.
Review?
-      I love how everyone I interviewed immediately knew what the problem I was going to mention was because it’s such a common problem. This goes to show that there is a lot of opportunity to improve with this issue.

Summary:
-      It’s still all there. Everyone I asked felt the same I did and feels it needs improvement.
-      I do believe there is more opportunity but not so much as new opportunity,

-      I believe customer feedback is a huge influence in marketing your item. If you’re not pleasing your consumers, then who are you going to market to?

Entrepreneurship Things or Whatevaa

For me, in order to pinpoint a certain time in which I was entrepreneurial I must know the true definition of this. I found this to be more so a process instead of a responsibility A time when I took on a process that made my life more entrepreneurial was when I was in high school and I chose to take on leadership that I knew would end up in my financial profit. I took on the position of being our district president for my student health academy. I did this by formulating a plan and designing the outline for our conferences where many students come to show their health projects and practices. This in return gave me not only experience but something was going to benefit me with power in the future, whether that be getting into the school I wanted or having the opportunity of gain more experience and get a job from this.
I have decided to enroll in this class due to the requirement of the Innovation minor I am trying ot obtain. I really want to get the most out of these classes and change my mindset from being so defeated in times of trial and be able to solve my problems in an ethical and progressive way.

Da Bugs?

1. Making my bed in the morning is extremely difficult and time consuming because I have to pull the under sheet up from being in a ball. Why? Because there is nothing that holds the comforter to the top sheet so when I sleep I kick it to the bottom of the bed.
2. I make a fresh cup of coffee every morning and have to wait for it to cool off which is very time consuming when I am rushing out of the door Why? Because coffee makers don’t have coffee brewed at a consumable temperature but instead very hot.
3. Every morning I also take a bottle of water with me to school. On most of the backpacks that I have there is no place to put a water bottle so I am stuck holding it Why? Because backpack companies didn’t anticipate the need for these bottles or simply wanted you to spend more money on the options that have the water bottle holder
4. Before i get out of bed I find it extremely hard to get warm enough to feel comfortable getting up. Why? I have windows in my room that have allowed the cold inside my room. Therefore there is a significant difference in temperature in my room compared to the rest of my apartment
5. I take the bus to school every day and when I go out of my apartment at 8:10 every morning the bus is very unpredictable and is often not consistent so I don’t know whether or not it will be on time. Why? I assume that there are different amounts of stops the bus driver makes every morning that either deter or speed up their route.
6. After I leave my apartment, i often have already put my keys in my backpack for the day so I have to dig them out again to lock the door but this takes a minute to do whenever I am rushing out of the door. Why? Because I haven’t anticipated this after all of the practice I’ve had and still make this mistake every morning
7. Before I make it out of the door I don’t know the exact temperature outside and sometimes don’t plan for this and don’t know what clothing I need for that specific temperature Why? I was not taught to know how the temperature reflect what clothes would be most comfortable leaving me either too hot or too cold during the day
8. I live in a 4 bedroom apartment and we all share a dishwasher which we have trouble with because we never know if the dishes are dirty or clean and have to ask everyone in the apartment to find out wether or not we can use them. Why? Dishwashers don’t typically come with an indicator of them being dirty or clean and most don’t have lights or signals that tell us they have been ran.
9. Due to the location of my apartment I cannot take the bus directly near my class. I always have to walk a little bit before i get to my class because it drops me off across campus Why? The city of Gainesville decided the bus routes and according to them the buses shouldn’t take us to the other side of campus so we have to stick to what we can get.
10. When I get to class I use a binder for my classes and it often has it to where the clips don’t line up and it allows the papers to fall out. Why? The pressure that I put on my book bag bends the middle metal clips.
11. I charge all of my devices at night and it’s often really hard to coordinate all of the chords and I have to use multiple wall plugs so my devices aren’t all in one place. Why? Due to the need of a computer, a phone, headphones, and a watch for college I have to charge these things every night so I can rely upon them for meetings and consistent school work
12. When I meet people out for coffee or for lunch, i enjoy treating other people but usually only continue this trend with people who treat me back occasionally and sometimes it’s hard to remember who has done that for me. Why? It’s hard to remember every interaction and paying is such a small part of the interaction that it’s easy to forget.
13. Whenever I decide in the morning that I don’t want to deal with the hassle of contacts I choose to wear my glasses which end up hugging my nose so tight with pressure that I have a headache by the end of the day. Why? A lot of classes aren’t build for people with larger nose bridges and it is impossible to adjust them to your face shape.
14. Cellphone fixation is a huge problem with me in the morning because I will continually sit on my phone instead of racking my morning duties. Why? Our generation has a phone fixation and this is due to the fear of missing out (FOMO) and we often ignore our daily tasks to be on social media or talking to our friends
15. Just like everyone else I have a hard time remembering where I park; either on campus or in a shopping complex. Why? We go a lot of places in our car and it is often really easy to forget where you parked in the hundred of choices that they offer
16. No show socks are SO hard to keep on your feet during the day because they slip off the back of your feet and make it so uncomfortable to walk around until you can find some place to fix them. Why? No show socks only go on a part of your heel and this makes it easy for them to slip off when you walk and they rub against your shoe.
17.. Just like everyone else in my generation, I enjoy using social media such as Instagram and Twitter. When we post things there are certain times that we plan for to optimize the amount of likes we get and the exposure our post gets so I don’t ever know when the right time to post a picture is to maximize my popularity. Why? Certain times are the peak of social media use due to the various activities that people have during the day, including work and school.
18. In the coldness of the Gainesville “winter”, a lot of people have the problem of lip chapping. I always forget to bring my chapstick which results in my lips suffering through the pain and look crusty. Why? Chapstick is such a small necessity that people ALWAYS lose it and have to buy more.
19. selling clothes in the area that you live is really hard unless you want to pawn them off at a local shelter or thrift store getting little to no money back for them. Why? There isn’t a universal way to sell your items and often sites like craigslist won’t allow you to get a reasonable price.
20. Since everyone has access to the internet and are able to put any information they would like on there. I try to maximize the nutrition that I intake with foods that will be good for mu diet but it is really hard to search things such as that online because a lot of the articles aren’t peer reviewed so I get a lot of false information. Why? The internet allows anyone with computer access and a brain (sometimes a brain) to put anything and everything they want online without making the information remotely correct.

Conclusion: This assignment was really easy in the beginning because everyone has those little problems they have to deal with everyday that aggravate them but towards the end I was having a harder time coming up with problems that are less surface level and I had to think really hard about what really bothers me that would have a root cause instead of my easily agitated personality just being annoying. This assignment did allow me to think of some things that would be easily fixable so maybe I will start working on some solutions!

30A Congrats everyone!

The moments that stick out to me the most are the posts that I had to video myself to unveil my product. It was nerve racking but put it in...
